Are QR Codes Safe? How to Spot and Avoid Scams

The code itself is not dangerous. The link inside it can be.

The risk

A sticker placed over a real payment or menu code can send people to a fake site. Check the URL preview before you tap, especially for payments.

Codes you create

If you generate the code yourself on qrfyy, you chose the destination. Scan your own print with the scanner so you know it matches.

Read the URL before you tap

The camera should show the address. Look for a name you recognize. Be careful with shortened links on a payment sticker. If the sticker looks new or crooked on top of an old code, do not pay.

Protect codes you printed

Use a matte stand for a payment code so people cannot slide a new sticker under the plastic unnoticed. For your own menu and WiFi codes, scan the printed file once so you know the link is yours.

FAQ

Can a QR code install an app by itself?

No. It can only open a link or show text. You still have to confirm the next step.
