QR Code on a Tarpaulin: Size, Placement & Printing Tips (PH)

Putting a QR code on a tarp for your store, event or birthday? How big to make it, where to place it, which file to give the printer, and how to test it.

In the Philippines, the tarpaulin is the all-purpose sign: store openings, sari-sari store price lists, birthday and christening greetings, school events, barangay announcements, "Now Accepting GCash" banners. Adding a QR code turns that tarp into a shortcut to your Facebook page, menu, map location or event form.

But a tarp isn't a flyer. It's big, it hangs above eye level, it's viewed from across the street, and it's printed on glossy vinyl that can catch the sun. A QR code that would be perfect on paper can fail completely on a tarp. Here's how to get it right.

What should the QR code on your tarp do?

Pick one clear action. Good options:

  • Follow your page: a Facebook page QR code for store updates and promos.
  • See the menu or price list: handy for carinderias and milk tea shops.
  • Get directions: a map link for a new branch.
  • Register or RSVP: a Google Form for an event or reunion.
  • Watch a video or see photos: for birthdays, debuts and christenings.

Write the action next to the code in big letters: "I-scan para sa menu" or "Scan to follow us."

How big should the QR code be on a tarpaulin?

Size depends on how far away people will stand when they scan. A common rule of thumb is that the code should be at least one-tenth of the scanning distance wide:

Where people scan fromSuggested minimum width
1 meter (counter tarp, table)about 10 cm
2 meters (wall beside a door)about 20 cm
3 meters (above a store entrance)about 30 cm

These are starting points, not a qrfyy lab test. Test before you print the final tarp. Our QR code size guide for printing explains why.

The more data in the code, the more (and smaller) modules it needs. QR codes range from Version 1 (21 脳 21 modules) to Version 40 (177 脳 177 modules). A short link means bigger modules at the same printed size, which matters a lot for a code scanned from meters away. A dynamic QR code helps here because it stores a short redirect instead of your full link, and you can change the destination later without reprinting the tarp.

Where to place it on the tarp

  • At a height people can reach with their phone camera. A code at the very top of a tarp hung above a door may be too high and too far. If the tarp is high up, consider a second, smaller code at the counter.
  • Away from eyelets, folds and edges. Grommets, ropes and the folds from storage can cut through the code.
  • On a plain, light area. Not on top of a photo, pattern or gradient.
  • Near the call to action, so people connect the code with what they'll get.

Design rules that matter more on tarps

Keep the quiet zone

DENSO WAVE, which invented the QR code, specifies a four-module-wide blank margin on all sides. Tarp layouts are often crowded, so this is the margin that gets squeezed. Give it room.

Dark on light, high contrast

Black or dark navy on white is safest. Red, yellow or pastel codes, or a white code on a colored tarp, are risky outdoors. See QR code design tips for more.

Watch out for glare

Tarp vinyl can be shiny. Under direct sun, a bright reflection across the code can block scanning. If your printer offers a matte option, consider it, or position the tarp to avoid direct glare on the code.

Which file to give your printer

Large prints magnify every flaw, so file quality matters.

  • Best: SVG. It's a vector file and stays sharp at any size. Download it free from the qrfyy generator.
  • If they need PNG: ask what resolution they print at and generate the PNG at that size. Large-format printers often work below the 300 dots per inch typical for paper, but ask your shop.
  • Don't send a small PNG and ask them to "palakihin." Stretching it causes blur.

On qrfyy, PDF and EPS downloads wrap a PNG, so they won't get sharper when enlarged. SVG is the one to use for tarps.

Tarp ideas by use

Sari-sari stores and small shops

A "Pay with GCash / Maya" tarp should show the official payment QR from your e-wallet app, printed large and clearly labeled with your account name. A QR generator can't create e-wallet payment codes. A separate code can link to your Facebook page for restock announcements. See QR codes for sari-sari stores.

Events and celebrations

Birthday, debut and christening tarps can link to a photo album, a livestream or an RSVP form. Use a dynamic code if you want to swap the RSVP link for the photo album after the event.

School and barangay announcements

Link to the full schedule, requirements or registration form, so the tarp only needs the headline.

Test before you print the final tarp

  • Print the code at its real size on regular paper (tile it across sheets if needed).
  • Tape it where the tarp will hang, or at the same height and distance.
  • Scan it with two different phones, one older if possible.
  • Check that the link opens on mobile data.

FAQ

How big should a QR code be on a 3x4 tarp?

It depends on scanning distance, not tarp size. For a tarp scanned from about 3 meters, start near 30 cm wide as a rule of thumb, not a qrfyy lab test, then test the print.

Can I put my GCash QR on a tarpaulin?

Yes, print the official QR image from the GCash app, large and clear, with your account name. qrfyy can't create GCash payment codes.

Why won't the QR code on my tarp scan?

Usually it's too small for the distance, has glare, or the margin is crowded. See why is my QR code not scanning.

What file format should I give the tarp printer?

SVG, so the code stays sharp at any size.

Can I change the link after the tarp is printed?

Only if you used a dynamic QR code.
