QR Code for a Car For Sale Sign: Sell Faster
Add a QR code to your car for sale sign so buyers can call, WhatsApp, or see photos and the full listing in one scan. Free, no signup.

The classic "For Sale" sign in a car window has one job: get a passer-by to contact you. Most fail at that. The phone number is too small to read from the pavement, nobody has a pen, and by the time the buyer gets home they've forgotten the car.
A QR code fixes that. Someone walking past scans it and immediately sees your photos, the price and the mileage, or opens a chat with you. This guide covers which QR code to put on your sign, how big to print it, and a sign layout that works.
Why a QR code helps you sell a car
- Interest becomes contact straight away. Buyers don't have to remember or type anything.
- The sign stays readable. You can put the details behind the code and keep the sign itself clean and bold.
- Buyers screen themselves. People who've already seen the full listing and the price are serious when they call.
- It works around the clock. Your car sits in a car park all day, and every passer-by is a potential lead.
Pick the right code for your sign
You have a few options. Most private sellers do best with one clear action, or two at most.
Option 1: Link to your online listing (most informative)
If you've already listed the car on a marketplace or classifieds site, put a QR code to that listing on the sign. Buyers see the photos, specs and price in one tap. Paste the listing link into the free QR code generator.
Tip: listings get renewed, relisted or removed. If you might move the ad, use a dynamic QR code so you can change the link without reprinting the sign. It's free on qrfyy for up to 20 codes, and you'll also see how many people scanned it.
Option 2: WhatsApp chat (most popular)
In many countries, buyers would rather message than call. A WhatsApp QR code opens a chat with your number. It does not add a pre-filled message. For a draft text, use an SMS code instead.
Option 3: Call or text
For buyers who prefer to call, use a phone number QR code. An SMS QR code can pre-fill a message, which is handy when you're at work and can't answer calls.
Option 4: A PDF spec sheet
If you don't want to list the car anywhere, put the details in a one-page PDF: photos, mileage, service history, price, and any known issues. Upload it, then use the PDF QR code generator. Our guide on how to turn a PDF into a QR code explains hosting.

What to put on the sign itself
The QR code does the heavy lifting, but the sign still needs a few basics in letters big enough to read from 3–5 metres away:
- FOR SALE, big
- Price, or "Make an offer"
- Year, make, model
- Key details: mileage, fuel type, transmission
- The QR code with a clear call to action, such as "Scan for photos & details" or "Scan to WhatsApp me"
- Your phone number in plain text as a backup
A QR code without a label gets ignored. Always say what happens when someone scans. A QR code frame can show words like Scan Me on the preview. Those words are preview-only and are not baked into the downloaded PNG, so also print a short label next to the code.
How big should the QR code be?
People scan car signs from the pavement, or from the next parking space, not from 20 cm away. A useful rule of thumb is that the code's width should be about one-tenth of the scanning distance:
| Scan distance | Minimum QR width |
|---|---|
| 1 m (standing next to the car) | 10 cm |
| 2 m (pavement) | 20 cm |
| 3 m | 30 cm |
For a typical window sign, a code 10–15 cm wide is a practical minimum. See our QR code print size chart for more.
Printing and placement tips
- Print the code black on white. Car windows are tinted and reflective, and high contrast is the only thing that reliably works. Here's why colour changes can break a scan.
- Place it on the inside of the side rear window facing the pavement, plus a second sign in the rear windscreen.
- Watch out for tint. Dark tint can make a code unscannable from outside. Test it from the pavement with the sign in place.
- Beware of glare. Sunlight reflecting on glass can wash out the code. Matte paper reflects less than glossy paper.
- Laminate it if the sign will face dew, rain or heat for weeks.
- Test it from the actual distance on two different phones before you leave the car. Our pre-print test checklist covers everything.
A simple sign layout that works
FOR SALE 2018 Toyota Corolla 1.6 82,000 km · Petrol · Auto $X,XXX ONO [ QR CODE – 12 cm ] Scan for photos & full details Or WhatsApp: +XX XXX XXX XXXX
If you want two actions, print two clearly labelled codes side by side, for example "Photos & details" and "WhatsApp me". Keep them at least a code's width apart so phones don't pick up the wrong one.

Track interest (optional)
If you use a dynamic QR code for your listing link, you'll see scan time, device category, browser, and OS for each scan. That's useful feedback. Lots of scans but no messages often means the price or photos need work. Few scans means you should move the sign or make it bigger. Learn more in how to track QR code scans.
Safety tips for private sellers
- Use a number you're comfortable sharing publicly. Many sellers use a secondary SIM.
- Don't include your home address in the code or the PDF.
- Meet buyers in a public place and go with them on test drives.
- Once the car is sold, take the sign down. If you used a dynamic code, point it at a "Sold – thanks!" page.
The QR code gets buyers to your listing, but the listing still has to sell the car. If you drafted the description with ChatGPT and it reads like a brochure, rewrite it so it sounds like a real owner wrote it before you print the sign.
FAQ
What is the best QR code for a car for sale sign?
A link to your online listing gives buyers the most information. A WhatsApp or SMS code gets the quickest replies. Many sellers combine one of each, clearly labelled.
Can I update the QR code if I relist the car?
Only with a dynamic QR code. A static code always opens the same link, so if the listing URL changes, you'd need to print a new sign. qrfyy's Dynamic QR lets you change the destination for free.
Will a QR code work through tinted car windows?
It depends on how dark the tint is and on the lighting. Light tints are usually fine, but dark tints often block scans. Always test from outside the car. If it fails, put the sign on a board on the dashboard or roof instead.
Do I need an app to make or scan a car sale QR code?
No. You can make the code in your browser with qrfyy, with no signup, and buyers scan it with their normal phone camera.
How big should a QR code be on a car window?
At least 10 cm wide for close scans, and closer to 20 cm if buyers will scan from the pavement. Bigger is almost always better for car signs.
Can I use the same idea for a motorbike or boat?
Yes. The same setup works for anything with a "For Sale" sign: motorbikes, boats, bikes, caravans and even furniture on the kerb.
